Frost socks

Frost are warm and cosy, wool socks with a snow crystal pattern. They can be knitted with two colors, or as in the photos, with an extra color for rib, toe and heel. The Frost pattern has elements from Norwegian traditional knitting and fits both everyday use and finer occations.

The pattern has four sizes, S/60 sts, M/68 sts, L 76 sts, XL 84 sts. Sizes are approximate, use measurements to find the right size. Keep in mind that stranded colourwork is less elastic than knitting with one yarn.

Sizes can be changed by knitting with different gauge, for example 34 or 36 sts in 10 cm. Gauge is changed by using thicker/thinner yarn and/or needles.
To achieve desired gauge, it is recommended to knit a sample swatch. If the swatch has too many stitches in 10 cm, go up a needle size. If the swatch has too few stitches in 10 cm, go down a needle size.

The pattern has two alternatives for heel and toe. If desired, other heel and toe designs may also be used.

Suggested yarn: Sandnes Sisu / Gjestal Silja sock / Mayflower 1 class. Other sock yarn with length of approx. 175-210 meters in 50 g may be used. Pictured samples are knitted in Gjestal Silja sock and Sandnes Sisu.
Yarn amount: For shoe sizes up to EU 38-39: Colour 1: 50 g. Colour 2: 50 g, Colour 3: 50g. For shoe sizes over 38-39, there may be need for another 50 grams of colour 2 and 3. If only two colours are used, yarn amount for the colour used for cuff, heel and toe is 100 g.
Suggested needles: 5 double pointed needles size 2.5 mm and 5 double pointed needles size 2.75mm.
Gauge: 32sts = 10cm in stranded colourwork.
Sizes: S/60sts (M/68sts) L/76sts (XL/84sts)
Measurements (circumference): 19.2 cm (21.8 cm) 24.3 cm (26.9 cm). The measurements are based on gauge 32 sts in 10 cm.
