A Messier object is a star cluster or nebula catalogued by the French astronomer Charles Messier. He studied and catalogued over 100 star clusters as early as the 18th century. You need a telescope to see most of them, but the Pleiades and Andromeda galaxies, for example, are visible without one. Messier's socks are inspired by the starry sky and the patterns in traditional Norwegian knitting. Like the star clusters, they are sprinkled with stars from head to toe.
The pattern has two options for the toe and heel, but there are many other variations as well. You can choose a different type of toe and heel than those described in the pattern, if desired.
