A Messier object is another word for a star cluster or nebula. The French astronomer Charles Messier studied and created a catalog of over 100 star clusters as early as the 18th century. You need a telescope to see most of them, but for example the Pleiades and the Andromeda Galaxy are visible without one. Messier's mittens are inspired by the starry sky and the patterns in traditional Norwegian knitting. Like the star clusters, they are sprinkled with stars from end to end and are a perfect match for Messier's socks.
The pattern has a size that can be knitted larger or smaller by changing gauge, or by knitting more / fewer rounds with pattern.
