On April 9, 1940, the invasion of Norway during World War II began. The royal family and government left Oslo and fled northeast. The next day, Norwegian forces set up a roadblock at Midtskogen and managed to delay the Germans long enough for the king and government to complete the Elverum mandate, before continuing their escape towards Nybergsund. The mittens are inspired by the patterned knitted sweater that three-year-old Prince Harald wore during the escape.
The pattern has women's and men's sizes, based on the same number of stitches. The sizes are knitted larger or smaller by changing the gauge.
