April 9, 1940 marked the beginning of the invasion of Norway during World War II. The royal family embarked on a dramatic escape to get out of the country. During the escape, the then 3-year-old Prince Harald wore a knitted sweater with a beautiful old pattern. 80 years after, the pattern is still popular and I have made a pattern for childrens mittens, inspired by the sweater he wore.
The pattern has 3 sizes, all using the same stitch number. Size is adjusted by using different gauge. Gauge is changed by using thicker/thinner yarn and/or needles. Keep in mind that stranded colourwork is less elastic than knitting with one yarn.
To achieve desired gauge, it is recommended to knit a sample swatch. If the swatch has too many stitches in 10 cm, go up a needle size. If the swatch has too few stitches in 10 cm, go down a needle size.
Suggested yarn: Sandnes Sisu/50 g= 175 m (Dale Alpakka Forte classic/50 g = 110 m) Sandnes Peer Gynt/50 g = 91 m. Other yarn can be used. Choose yarn that gives the desired gauge.
Yarn amount: Colour 1: 50 g, colour 2: 50 g.
Suggested needles: Pattern is written using 5 double pointed needles size 2.5 (3) 3 mm for ribbing and 5 double pointed needles size 3 (3,5) 3,5 mm for colourwork/stockinette. Different needle sizes may be needed for different gauge.
Gauge: 30 (26) 22 sts = 10 cm in stranded colourwork.
Sizes: 2-4 years (4-6 years) 6-8 years. Sizes are approximate, use measurements.
Measurements in cm: Across cuff: 7 (8,5) 9. Across hand: 8 (9,5)10,5 Length from end of ribbing to tip: 12 (15) 17 Full length: 19,5 (23) 26 Thumb from base to tip: 3,7 (4,5) 5. For other sizes, adjust gauge.
