“Try the wine”, Captain Barbossa said to Elizabeth when dining in the captain’s cabin aboard the Black Pearl. Covered in grape vines and with toe, heel and rib dipped in wine I can’t decide whether these socks takes me to a crisp autumn morning on an Italian vineyard or to a dark and mysterious ship crewed by the damned. Maybe both.
The pattern has 76 sts and size is adjusted by using different gauge. Gauge is changed by using thicker/thinner yarn and/or needles. Keep in mind that stranded colourwork is less elastic than knitting with one yarn.
To achieve desired gauge, it is recommended to knit a sample swatch. If the swatch has too many stitches in 10 cm, go up a needle size. If the swatch has too few stitches in 10 cm, go down a needle size.
The pattern has two alternatives for heel and toe. If desired, other heel and toe designs may also be used.
Suggested yarn: Sandnes Sisu/Drops Fabel/Viking Frøya. Other sock yarn with length of approx. 175-210 meters in 50 g can be used. Pictured sample is knitted in Viking Frøya. Colours are 231 light green, 256 green and 221 burgundy.
Yarn amount: Colour 1: 50 g, colour 2: 100 g, colour 3: 50 g.
Suggested needles: Pattern is written using 5 double pointed needles size 2,5 mm , 5 double pointed needles size 2,75mm and gauge 32 sts in 10 cm. Different needle sizes may be needed for different gauge.
Gauge: 36 (34) 32 sts = 10 cm in stranded colourwork. Sample socks has 32 sts in 10 cm.
Sizes: 76sts. Actual size is adjusted with gauge.
Measurements (circumference): 21,1 cm (22,3 cm) 23,7 cm. For other sizes, adjust gauge.
